Environmental management has become an integral part of the activities of industry and governments. It is now a primary function and requirement closely tied to questions of economic development and environmental sustainability. It involves devising effective measures for the protection and conservation of the environment, natural and cultural heritage and natural resources.
Course Outline:-
1. Evaluating and Communicating Sustainability
This module explains and applies techniques for the valuation of natural capital and ecosystem services and explores how these are used to support decision making. The subject also examines methods used to account for changes environmental quality at sector and national level as a basis for policy
2. Environmental Regulation in Practice
This module aims to assist the student to explore the legislative framework, which governs environmental protection together with legal aspects of health, hygiene and safety. The law (ranging from international treaty obligation to local by-laws) can be very different in theory from the practice. It is therefore important not only to know the current law but also to understand where it comes from, how it is interpreted by the regulated and applied by the regulators
3. Environmental Policy
This module extends the introduction to environmental policy given in the Sustainability and Management module through detailed examination of the use of mandatory and voluntary regulation, economic instruments and market mechanisms to help achieve development goals.
4.Globalisation and Environmental Change
This module explores the nature of these global and integrating features, in the knowledge that many graduates of the course will pursue careers which are directly influenced by international and global change.
5.Principles of Sustainability
This module introduces the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability and sustainable development. It critically examines the use of the concept of sustainable development to guide decision making at international, national government and corporate levels. In this respect, the module provides an overall framework for the rest of the course as it integrates governance, policy, economics, business, and environmental science in pursuit of sustainable development
6.Technology, Environment and Society
This module explores technological change as part of positive sum strategies put forward by ecological modernisers. Theories of technological change are reviewed such as evolutionary, path dependent and long wave and used to formulate technology policy to achieve transition to a low carbon economy.
