THE SYLLABUS

Strategic Marketing                                              10 credits

The module aims to review the nature and scope of marketing strategy and evaluate how strategies are developed, given different organisational contexts. The module considers that strategy is a fundamental pattern of present and planned objectives, resource deployments and interactions of an organisation with markets, competitors and other environmental factors. It lays the foundation by appraising the mechanics of marketing strategy, considering the evolving models and practices that are essential to the development and implementation of strategy. It also examines contemporary issues and problems that dominate the thinking of marketing executives as they establish and execute a range of marketing strategies.

Strategic Financial Analysis                                 10 credits

Many people, even senior managers, are frightened by finance. It is often seen as a boring, accountants-only exercise, spoken in a language few fully understand. Finance is one of the most integral components of any business. It is therefore imperative that all those with management responsibility, have a stronger working knowledge of accounting practices, economic principles, and the techniques of financial analysis. This module breaks down the jargon, bringing the subject to life. It helps you to identify problems early and take remedial action to maintain a profitable and sustainable business.

Corporate Strategy                                               10 credits

The module will enable you to recognise and describe many different features of organisations. However, the module will encourage you to analyse these issues and be able to understand why organisations do what they do and look critically at their strategic decisions. Delegates should be able to recognise and understand the importance of the various aspects of strategic decision making and implementation processes

Strategic Management of Human Resource         10 credits

The module reviews the relationship of Personnel departments with respect to designing and delivering HRM interventions, the current and historical barriers to Personnel leading on HR and change management. A range of contemporary ideas on redesigning the role of Personnel are reviewed before the module evaluates the range of HR policies that make up a strategy; recruitment and retention, performance management, human resource development, employee relations, reward. The module concludes by examining HRM interventions in the light of the organisational development literature and practice. The basis of employee attitudes, commitment and cultural change are examined in terms of employee competence development through HRM.

Project Management                                              10 credits

This module will define the nature of projects and their management. Various aspects will be considered including financial control and management of risk, human resource elements (building and leading a multi disciplinary team) and the control of time. METHODOLOGY, TEACHING AND LEARNING

Methodology

Workshop attendance and active participation are very important to our programme, because participant opinions and discussion of the assigned study materials are an integral part of the learning experience. The reading of current news and relevant professional articles that focus on events and developments in the field of business and chosen specialisation are encouraged. Constructive contribution may include observations and questions about the course material as well as current events, and answers to questions raised by fellow participants. Case studies are an integral part of the programme. Additional opportunities for professional interaction and learning may be offered to you, including an orientation function at the beginning of the year, a social function in the course of the year and various guest speakers from industry and academia from time to time. In order to facilitate presentations, you are encouraged to use PowerPoint presentation or multimedia resources.

Workshops

Workshops define the content of the course and provide an essential overview of the subject. Assessments are based on the material covered in workshops, tutorials and participant own input. Final Grade will be based on individual assessment.

Tutorials

All participants are required to attend tutorial classes and to complete set work. Participants' contributions to workshop discussion, attendance and grade for work completed are recorded. Tutorials can vary greatly in character, according to the unit. There will always be an opportunity to raise questions arising from the lectures and from other aspects of the module.

Exercise Workshops

In a number of modules, exercise workshops are provided as well as, or in some cases, as alternatives to tutorials. In an exercise workshop the trainer will go through exercises (or sometimes an essay topic) explaining how the answers are arrived at. You will often be invited to participate. To get the most out of exercise workshops you should make sure you attempt to do the exercises before the workshop. You will then find that you are in a better position to participate, and you will understand and remember the answers much better.

ASSESSMENT

A range of assessments methods will be used on the programme, intended to establish whether the learning outcomes for each module have been achieved, and to promote self-managed and reflective learning. There is a blend of formative and summative assessments, which take a mixture of forms, such as essays, individual and group reports and presentations, self-assessment exercises, critical reviews and reflective exercises. Participants are thereby exposed to the variety of types and scenarios of decision-making confronted by international managers. In order to qualify for a degree awarded by the Middlesex University, the student must pass in all modules
